Scope and Contents
The collection contains reflections of the girlhood of Mary Belle Harris, her education in the U.S. and Europe, professions, travel and relationships with Jane Addams, Maud Ballingon Booth, Julia Anna Gardner, Elsie Janis, Elizabeth “Betty” Munger, Doris Reid, Ruth Byron, Owen Rohdy, Helen Hall Upham, Mabel Walker Willebrandt, and Caroline B.S. Wittpenn. Materials include publications, albums, diaries, personal writings, professional writings, photographs, sheet music, numismatic collection, and family trees.

Biographical / Historical
Mary Belle Harris (1874–1957) graduated from Bucknell with a degree in music in 1893, with an A.M. in 1894, and A.M. in Latin and classics in 1895. She is the daughter of Bucknell president John Howard Harris (1889-1919). In 1918, Harris began the superintendent of the State Reformatory for Women in Clinton, NJ. In 1925 she began superintendent of the Federal Industrial Institute for Women in Alderson, WV, the first federal prison for women in the U.S.
