Biographical / Historical

Cyrus Karraker was a Bucknell faculty member in the history department from 1934 to 1964. A faculty memorial describes him as “a gentle and spiritual Quaker who exemplified the Aristotelian maxim that ‘virtue is action.’” At Bucknell he was involved in creating courses in Russian and Asian history, supporting academic freedom, encouraging Japanese American students to enroll during World War II, and founding the campus chapter of the N.A.A.C.P. He was the founder and president of the Pennsylvania Citizens’ Committee on Migrant Labor and served on the following committees: National Committee for the Day Care of Children, the National Committee on the Employment of Youth, the National Child Labor Committee, and the National Committee on Education of Migrant Children.
