Scope and Contents
Items in this collection range in date from 1882 to 1971. Shaw’s manuscripts, proofs and published works appear first in the collection, followed by his correspondence, which comprises the bulk of the material. Two separately collected albums of correspondence, photographs, and miscellaneous items appear next, followed by theatrical business documents. Next are a series of correspondence to Shaw; papers of others concerning Shaw; and miscellaneous items of general interest, including drawings and photographs of Shaw. The last grouping is correspondence from dealers and scholars to LaFayette Butler about his Shaw collection. Comprising over 400 items, the collection measures approximately nine cubic feet.

Materials Specific Details
ACS with related ALS. The holograph ACS explains that Shaw has enclosed a letter originally addressed to Rothenstein. Shaw says that the letter is a duplicate, but the ALS is the original, [in holograph] numbered pps. 50-57. [When Shaw numbered the pages, he skipped p. 51]. In the ALS, Shaw encourages Rothenstein to stop asking for minor changes, adding: “… The popular tendency is to deny our own ministers credit for anything deeper than the merest opportunism, whilst imagining that every foreign Chancellor is a Machiavelli pursuing a secret and subtle design…”
