Administrative History
The Freedom in America essay writing contest was for history students in two history classes, with a prize of up to $200. It was primarily organized by Admiral Eller, Director of Engineering, though he did have help from Professor Oliphant in History. The funding came from Arthur Page, a donor in New York City. There was extensive correspondence about the organization of the contest from 1955 to 1958. The contest took place in 1956 and 1958. The Library of Congress compiled an extensive bibliography of sources on the history of freedom in America at Admiral Eller's request and with Professor Oliphant's guidance. The top three essays from each year of the contest have also been preserved.
