Materials Specific Details
Typescript of autobiographical journey-fantasy; n.d. [1949-50]; n.s. The boxed manuscript [175 pp. +] represents different stages in composition, and a stage preceding the final structure of the book.
There are 2 gaps in the manuscript, which lacks Chapter VII and XIX. Chapter XX, "Green Tape," is Chapter XXI of the published book, indicating that the crucial, "Once Only," Chapter XX of the book, had not yet been established as the imaginative climax of the work. Chapters V and VI,Chapters VIII-XVIII, and Chapter XX are of the same stage of development; pagination within each chapter is discrete. Each chapter has a title page. Chapters V - XX: 139 pp.; 20.2 x 25.3, some few being irregular.
The opening typescript chapters include no version of the book's second chapter. Chapter I [9 pp.; 21.6 x 28.0, several being irregular, cut, or cut and pasted] with 3 prefatory pages, was originally, authorial revisions indicate, Chapter II. There are 2 versions of Chapter III. The earlier stage [6 pp.; 20.2 x 25.3, with some irregularity] has extensive autograph revisions in pen and pencil. The later draft of Chapter III [6 pp.; 21.7 x 28.0] is close to the published version. There are 2 versions of Chapter IV, neither quite approaching the "'Lillbullero'" of the published work. The earlier draft, heavy with autograph revisions in ink, consists of 7 pp.; 21.6 x 28.0, numbered 30-36; it is incomplete. The second version, 7 pp. 20.2 x 25.4; 2 pp. 21.6 x 27.9, also with revisions in ink, also incomplete, though closer to the published chapter, does not approximate its complete form. Five additional pp.; [1, 2], 9, 10, 130 in pagination.
Publication: Atlantic Monthly, October 1948; Rolling Down the Lea, Constable, London, 1950 [in final form].
