Correspondence

 Series

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The collection consists of two series: manuscripts and correspondence, dated from 1884 to 1931. The manuscripts include corrected proofs of two manuscripts; the author’s holographic revisions appear on the correct proofs of Memoirs of My Dead Life and Ulick and Soracha.

The corrected proofs are followed by the letters ordered alphabetically by correspondent, thereafter chronologically. Fifteen letters were written by Moore to Lady Eden or her husband William. This correspondence, spanning more than twenty-five years, from 1894-1920, deals primarily with Moore’s books and his intimate friendship with the Edens. Not every letter is addressed or dated, but each was clearly intended for either Lady or Sir Eden. A second large grouping of correspondence includes the letters written in 1927 from Moore to J.R. Wells, his contact at the W.E. Rudge publishing firm. Moore discusses his literary projects and expresses his dissatisfaction with printing delays. The remainder of the letters are to various correspondents and deal primarily with his books.
