Administrative History
In 1934, the Bucknell University Christian Association was founded to unite the campus Christian groups (including the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Student Church, and fellowship groups) to create a “self-conscious Christian community of students and faculty with the specific purpose, but not an ecclesiastic community.” Through programs, lectures, worship, study, and community service, the group encouraged the campus community to become a more concerned and active society. It included an Advisory Committee composed of faculty, staff, and student members. The Executive Council was comprised of elected student members. The Cabinet was made up of the Executive Council and committee chairs. Committees included but were not limited to student church, intercollegiate, new students, open house, finance, outings, literature, recreation room, hobby club, deputations, social action. Committees organized special programs and outings, hosted Mother’s and Father’s Day banquet, and produced the student handbook from 1933 to 1957.
Forrest D. Brown was the General Secretary until he retired in June 1966. James D. Hammerlee succeed him as Executive Secretary. In February 1968, the Bucknell University Christian Association was renamed Concern Through Action (CONTACT) and was referred to as C.A. In 1971, the name changed again to Concern and Action.
Note: From approximately 1932 until the merger in 1934, there was an effort to refer to the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) as the Christian Association.
