Scope and Contents

The records of the Committee on Instruction are arranged alphabetically by folder title and range from 1978 to the present. Included in the records are agendas, correspondence, and minutes. Additionally, there are records relating to reviews of the January Program, Summer School and the Writing Program/Center. A significant amount of the records are those of the sub-committees: Board of Review on Academic Responsibility, Residential College Steering Committee, Composition Council, Honors Council, Committee on International Education, and Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid.

Administrative History

The Committee on Instruction at Bucknell University was originally established as a committee of the University Senate. After the University Senate was dissolved in 1978, the Committee continued to exist as a University Committee. The Committee advises the Faculty with regard to the instructional programs of the University.

The responsibilities of the Committee on Instruction include:

a) Reviewing the curriculum as a whole and that of each college.

b) Formulating and recommending policy for all academic programs not under the jurisdiction of a College, including the Graduate Program, Summer Programs, Honors Program, and University Course Program.

c) Formulating and recommending policy concerning grading and evaluating students, and the keeping of records thereof.

d) Overseeing the construction of the University Calendar, the scheduling of courses, and the publication of the Catalogue.

e) Reviewing, recommending, and, when charged by the University Faculty, making provision for the administration of experimental and special instructional programs beyond the jurisdiction of the Colleges.

f) Formulating and recommending policy for admissions and financial aid.
