Administrative History
The Office of the Chaplain was established in 1955 with Mark C. Ebersole appointed as the first university chaplain. The mission of the Office of the Chaplain was to provide an environment for members of the university community to develop in their various religious traditions and faiths and to enhance their moral maturity and sensitivity. The goals of the office included providing a program of worship to vitally engage the community and nurture spiritual growth and fostering appreciation for and sharing of differing religious orientations and commitments.
In fall 2001, the Office of the Chaplain was renamed Office of Chaplains and Religious Life. In fall 2018, it was renamed the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life.
