Administrative History
Bucknell University hosted the Fitzwilliam String Quartet in residence between 1978 to 1985. In 1981, the members of the group--Christopher Rowland, Jonathan Sparey, Alan George, and Ioan Davies--were awarded honorary degrees in Doctor of Music by Bucknell University. The son of composer Dmitri Shostakovich, conductor and pianist Maxim Shstakovich, was in attendance at the ceremony. Arranged by Bucknell in 1982, the Fitzwilliam String Quartet presented a series of performances of 15 quartets by Shostakovich at Lincoln Center's Tully Hall. The group returned to Bucknell as Affiliate Artists in 1998 and for many years following.
